Focus on the Family's Christian Counselors Network

I have been practicing since 1980, working full time as the Director of Counseling at Messiah College. In addition to providing counseling to hundreds of students, I have trained and supervised many counselors. I have taught undergraduate psychology courses and done consulting with agencies, schools, and individuals. I have also been in private practice since 1980, working primarily with individuals and couples. I have treated a broad range of patients, with the most common problems being depression, anxiety, and marital problems. Over the years, I have helped people with many different kinds of adjustment issues, parenting problems, and spiritual concerns. I have worked with pastors and their wives and families as well as individuals struggling with pain associated with unhealthy church dynamics.

My office is attached to my home, in a semi-rural setting. I seek to help patients feel comfortable, eliminating the "mystery" that often attaches to counseling, and creating an atmosphere where both of us are partners in the change process. Issues of faith are commonly dealt with, in keeping with the comfort level of the patient. As people and backgrounds vary greatly, I do not practice a "one-size-fits-all" approach; rather, I adapt my approach to the individual and his or her needs. That means I sometimes use cognitive behavioral therapy. With others, I use a more reflective approach.
